Generally, a holder of an Armenian visa is not permitted to work in Armenia unless they also possess a work permit. Expats with exceptional qualifications, entrepreneurs, executives, and members of specific other groups are not required to obtain a work permit. A valid employer will submit a work permit application to their employees, which is then granted for the term of the working contract.
Process:
1. The employer must first apply for a work permit and a job-based residence permit by contacting the Migration Service (workpermit.am) if the foreign worker is not excluded from work permit requirements.
2. Checking the Armenian market to make sure there are no qualified and available Armenian workers to fill openings is part of the process at the Migration Service. The employer will be contacted for an interview if the Migration Service finds any Armenian citizens who would fit the job's qualifications. The employer is not allowed to post a job listing or provide a set salary (as long as the minimum wage standards are met).
3. Employers can apply if the Migration Service does not recommend any candidates to them or if they reject them for valid reasons.
4. Employers may apply for a work permit for a specific foreign national if the Migration Service does not recommend any candidates to them or if they turn them down for valid grounds. The period of the work permit is set and can be extended upon request. A foreigner can begin working in Armenia as soon as they receive a work permit.
Terms, documentation, and costs:
After the application date, a work permit and a temporary residency card are issued in around 30 days.
The cost of getting a work permit (AMD 25,000, or roughly USD 52) and, if required, a temporary residence permit (AMD 105,000, or roughly USD 219) will be borne by the company or employee.
The employer needs to send the following paperwork to the Migration Service:
- Form for Application
- Employee Passport
- Diplomas and other documents bearing the legalization (or apostille) of a consulate attesting to education or qualifications
- A pair of Passport Photos (3 × 4 cm)
- Verification of the payment of state fees
